The Cold Hard Truth
Everyone has, at some point, applied to a job posting and never heard back. Have you ever sent out so many resumes that you don't even remember which companies that you've applied to? Well, here is the truth. For every job posting out there, there are 150+ people applying. 100+ people that aren't qualified, maybe 5-10 people that are qualified, and 40+ people that are passively looking. Statistically, only 1 out of every 13 hires come from a job posting.
I can't tell you how many times I have gotten a resume from someone completely unqualified for a position. Did you know that over 80% of applicants don't even read the job description on a LinkedIn job posting? They will just randomly apply to any opening, reuse an old resume/CV and blow up my inbox, over and over again. Do you know why the best candidates, that most recruiters come across, come through a referral or by someone personally poaching them? It is because no rational person is going to stake their own reputation on referring a bad candidate. Or it's because the best candidates aren't the ones that are actively looking.
I will get a pile of resumes and take an average of 25 seconds to scan each one. I can tell instantly when I come across great candidates. They aren't job hoppy, there aren't any typos in their resume, and their resume isn't 2 pages long. They're the chosen few who make the cut. Because A) they really want the job and B) they did their homework before they applied. If you really want the job, you have got to get your ducks in a row before you submit a resume. Once you hit send, your resume has gone into the ATS system, and it is there forever. That is your first impression. That copy is the one you can never take back.
Here's the thing. A great recruiter knows ahead of time, when a job is becoming available. I know how many job openings for government position I need to fill months in advance. I know when a job has been internally posted and when it is allowed to be posted publicly. I know which companies are expanding, which are merging, which are scaling back, who is resigning, who is getting a promotion, who is retiring, and who to call. My job is to stay ahead of the curve and have amazing candidates ready to accept the position when it goes live.
By the time that a good job crosses your path, it has already been filled. Either internally or through a recruiter like me.
